Artificial Intelligence Lodge created as a special interest lodge.
Ancient Tradition Meets Modern Technology: The Masonic Artificial Intelligence Lodge Launches Under the United Grand Lodge of England. A groundbreaking new chapter in Freemasonry has opened with the launch of The Masonic Artificial Intelligence Lodge (ailodge.uk), a regular Lodge operating under the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) in the Metropolitan Area. Founded to explore the profound ethical, societal, and technological questions raised by artificial intelligence, the Lodge brings together Freemasons who build, govern, policy, or simply seek to understand the defining technology of the 21st century.
br> Operating under the Latin motto Sapientia Per Rationem Artificiosam (“Wisdom Through Artificial Reasoning”), the Lodge preserves the full traditions, ancient degree ceremonies, and core Masonic values—Integrity, Strength, Charity, Wisdom & Truth, and Beauty—while focusing its post-meeting festive boards and intellectual discussions on the frontier of AI.
The SIL was the brainchild of Nick Lockett, a barrister and AI risk expert, the Lodge provides a unique, off-the-record forum for technologists, lawyers, ethicists, academics, and policymakers to exchange ideas, whilst grounded in Masonic fellowship.
Intellectual Focus: The Five Pillars of AIThe Lodge’s intellectual programme centers on five critical domains shaping the future of humanity: Ethics & Governance: Examining value systems and accountability in autonomous tools.
Safety & Risk: Navigating societal impact when systems fail or succeed.
Policy & Law: Addressing regulatory frameworks and parliamentary adaptation.
Technology & Innovation: Exploring cutting-edge models and technical frontiers.
AI & Humanity: Investigating the impact of artificial intelligence on human identity, creativity, and work.
The Lodge welcomes both existing Master Masons looking to join as well as candidates new to Freemasonry who wish to undertake their initiation. Technical expertise as a software engineer is not required; the Lodge invites anyone with a serious interest in the broader questions raised by AI.
The Lodge intends to have fortnightly lectures as Lodges of instruction) open to all freemasons split into three categories (i) AI Beginners, (ii) AI Practitioners (iii) Advanced AI.
Whilst officially an AI Lodge, the Lodge will also cover Robotics endowed with AI and their implications.
